Dating from the period of Illyrian-Roman wars, Podgorica was always at the crossroads for Greek travellers, Roman legionnaires, Byzantine messengers, Serbian noblemen, Venetian merchants, Turkish invaders, Montenegrin warriors... More than 70 bombings in the Second World War have wiped out many buildings and monuments from the previous centuries.
