Swimming, kayaking, and sport fishing are popular on the lake itself, while the surrounding forests can be explored by hiking and horseback riding.Fishing is best at the southern end of Lake Guttiérrez, where the Torrontegui river flows into the lake. Declining fish populations led the national park service to restock the lake, so rainbow, brown, and brook trout are plentiful once again. Two seabirds, the kelp gull and blue-eyed cormorant, typically found on the ocean, also live on Lake Gutiérrez and throughout Nahuel Huapi National Park. To get there, follow route 40 for around 9 miles (15 kilometers) from downtown Bariloche. Turn right and cross an old wooden bridge to reach the beach. If you’re staying overnight, you’ll find most accommodations, including Los Baqueanos campsite, on the southern shore, which you can reach by continuing along route 40.Lake Gutiérrez is at its best, and its busiest, during the summer months (between December and February), when there are opportunities for kayaking, swimming, and hiking. The beaches and campsites can get crowded during the warmer season, so make arrangements in advance and avoid weekends and holidays, if possible.For one of the best views of the lake, you can follow the 6-mile (10-kilometer) Gutiérrez Balcony route by car, bicycle, or foot. This route connects the lake to the town of Villa Catedral via an inclining mountain trail, with many curves, that leads to an incredible panoramic view.

The chapel is also known for its colorful stained-glass windows.San Eduardo Chapel is a typical stop on walking tours of Bariloche. Hikers making their way along the Circuito Chico also often stop at the chapel to take a break and enjoy the views.<ul><li>Visiting the chapel requires climbing up a stone staircase of more than 50 steps, unless you arrive by car.</li><li>Entrance to the chapel is free of charge.</li><li>Visitors are encouraged to contribute to the chapel’s upkeep via the donation box by the entrance.</li></ul>The chapel is located on Avenida Exequiel Bustillo, in the Llao Llao area. From the center of Bariloche, you can reach San Eduardo Chapel using the colectivo (bus) number 20. If you arrive by car, you can park in the lot at the entrance, which means you don’t have to walk up the steps.Visitors can soak up the atmosphere of Bariloche’s community by attending mass at the San Eduardo Chapel, held every Sunday in the late morning and early evening. Outside of mass, the chapel doesn’t have regular opening hours but visitors are welcome to admire the exterior and surrounding views at any time.In front of San Eduardo Chapel, and next to the famed Llao Llao Hotel, Puerto Pañelo (Port Handkerchief) is said to have been named for the handkerchiefs raised to bid farewell to departing travelers. Mountain passes link the range to the towns, and there are refugios to rest and refresh.The best time of year to visit Lopez Hill for hiking and mountain biking is the summer season, between December and March. If not taking a tour, you can take a bus from Bariloche or drive to the lake. Some of the Lake Moreno’s several beaches are easily accessible via paved roads.The lake can be visited any time of year, although winter weather conditions may restrict access to the area because of snow and ice. Naturally summer is best for water-based fun. Moreno is also the only lake in the area where you can fish year-round (with a fishing permit), since most of its water does not come from ice melt.Lake Moreno is a favorite destination for water sports and has great beaches for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. The navigable lake is easily accessible from Nahuel Huapi Lake, so engine-powered boats are also allowed. You’ll find a small restaurant located next to the bridge that connects both sides of the lake.

You can walk directly to the viewpoint from town (it takes around 1.5 hours) or drive there in 10 minutes. The viewpoint is a 1.5-hour drive north of Bariloche—the route includes unpaved roads.Mirador del Traful is at its most beautiful when the sun is shining on the sparkling surface of the lake. Watching the sun go down in the late afternoon is also very rewarding. Most visitors come here and explore the surrounding national park in spring and summer (September through March) when the weather is best.Across the lake from the viewpoint, the submerged forest is a natural phenomenon that has occurred due to the movement of tectonic plates causing the forest on the mountainside to sink into the lake. You can see more than 60 cypress trees completely submerged in the crystal-clear water of Lake Traful. You can see it from the viewpoint but will get the best views from a boat or by taking a snorkel or diving excursion with a local operator.

The closest bus drops you off at the town of Colonia Suiza, which is 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) from the start of the hike. This bus takes an hour from Bariloche, so make sure you factor in the additional travel and walking time into your plan. The hike itself takes between four and six hours, round trip.The best time to go hiking in the Bariloche region is December–March, which is Argentinian summer. Some hiking trails are accessible as early as November and as late as May, but make sure you’re equipped for lingering or early season snow and ice (bringing crampons, which can be slotted over your hiking boots, are a good idea). If visiting in winter, Cerro Bellavista will be snow-covered, and it’s not advisable to attempt it without mountaineering gear.Colonia Suiza, the village where the bus stops to ascend Cerro Bellavista, is a curious chalet town that give the impression of having traveled back in time. Puerto Panuelo is located 16 miles (25 kilometers) west of Bariloche, or about a 35-minute drive. Covering an area of more than 1,450 acres (587 hectares), the glacial lake is a hidden gem fed by the Manso River and prized by fly fishers for its trout-filled waters.The crystal clear waters of Lake Steffen are the perfect setting for sailing, swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Large motorboats are not permitted on the lake, which helps it to remain free of pollution. Whitewater rafting is a possibility on the Manso River—one section of it, close to Lake Steffen Lake, is a Class III. There are also a variety of hiking trails around the lake and in the surrounding area within Nahuel Huapi National Park.<ul><li>There is a shoreside campsite with hot showers where visitors can spend the night.</li><li>Bring all of your food and supplies with you, as there are no nearby stores.</li><li>The water is always cold in the glacial lake—a temperature that's ideal for cooling off on a hot day, but swimmers should be prepared.</li><li>There is no cell reception at the lake.</li></ul>Lake Steffen is located about 42 miles (68 kilometers) south of Bariloche off of Route 40. The final stretch of the route is a 7-mile (12-kilometer) dirt road in poor condition, so it is necessary to have a 4WD vehicle, go with a tour, or walk. The dirt road down to the lake operates on a one-way timetable, so be sure to check before setting out.The best time to visit is in summer, between November and May. As Lake Steffen is tricky to access, it is usually uncrowded. However, January brings a relatively large number of visitors so it is best avoided then. As it is far from light pollution, Lake Steffen is an excellent spot for stargazing after dark, so spend the night if possible.The province of Rio Negro is famed for its beautiful lakes, which visitors can experience by following the popular Ruta de los Siete Lagos (or Route of the Seven Lakes), which includes Espejo Lake and Villarino Lake. You can do the route in one day by guided tour or private vehicle.
