Experience the breathtaking wildlife of Chobe National Park, a must-visit destination for any safari enthusiast. Our journey through Chobe, facilitated by Tratoli, was a testament to the park's reputation for exceptional game drives. Within mere hours, we were awestruck by the sight of countless elephants, zebras, springboks, and hippopotamuses. Our eyes were also treated to the elegance of giraffes, the robustness of buffaloes, the grace of wildebeests, kudus, lechwes, and an array of diverse birdlife. However, one must note that the hefty entrance fees could justify better maintenance, especially regarding signage throughout the park. It seems that much of the current signage has become the unintended scratching posts for the local fauna, with directions faded or signs completely toppled over—Chobe and Savuti alike. Visitors can easily find themselves at a loss, facing dead ends or veering off course, which detracts from the otherwise magnificent experience. The condition of the roads in northern Botswana, including the highways to Chobe, leaves much to be desired. Our drive from Sehitwa to Shakawe, aptly dubbed 'Pothole Avenue', exposed us to stretches of road where tar seems but a fond memory, overshadowed by unavoidable and treacherous potholes. Similarly, the Maun-Nata-Kasane road suffers from neglect. This situation speaks to a greater need for the Botswanan government to prioritize infrastructure maintenance in support of sustainable tourism, rather than short-term mining exploits that benefit foreign investors and cause undue wear on these vital routes. Botswana could indeed take cues from neighboring Namibia regarding infrastructure management and tourism. Those wishing to visit Chobe might consider traveling via the Caprivi Strip as an alternative. Upon reaching Kasane—one finds an array of accommodation options from lavish lodges to cozy guesthouses amid burgeoning development. Sadly, this expansion seems to sideline thoughtful urban planning, especially in catering to the town's primary revenue: tourists. Kasane's old center, once alive with evening activity, now stands quiet aside from the social buzz humming within the lodges and larger guesthouses. More strategic urban planning could greatly enhance the town's appeal, shifting away from the current focus on industrial zones and generic shopping centers. Reflecting on my time living in Botswana 30 years ago, Kasane was smaller, yet it exuded a lively and engaging charm that today's visitors might hope to see revitalized.

I recently embarked on an unforgettable 3-day/2-night safari adventure with two friends, a trip made exceptional from start to finish. Our guide, Gee, was an absolute delight—his expertise and kindness significantly contributed to what was undoubtedly the best weekend of my life. Our accommodation in spacious, clean tents surpassed expectations, providing a cozy respite under the stars. The wildlife encounters were nothing short of spectacular—we were able to observe an array of animals including leopards, lions, their cubs, elephants, giraffes, and more, thanks to Gee's incredible tracking skills and knowledge of animal behavior. His professionalism ensured our safety throughout the safari, allowing us to enjoy the experience fully. Moreover, the culinary experience at the camp was quite satisfying. The chef and the entire camping staff were cordial and attentive, enhancing the overall enjoyment of our stay. This memorable safari was booked through Tratoli, and both the experience and their service left an indelible mark on us. If you're looking for an enriching wildlife journey, I couldn't recommend them enough.
