Los Roques Archipelago

A national-park reef archipelago 35 minutes' flight from Caracas: bone-white shadeless beaches, world-class diving and some of the Caribbean's best game fishing.

Last verified 29 August 2026

Location
Parque Nacional Archipiélago Los Roques, Caribbean Sea
Suggested duration
Day trip possible; 2–3 nights is the point
Best time to visit
Year-round Caribbean warmth
How to reach
Light aircraft from Caracas (Maiquetía) to Gran Roque, then boats between cays
With kids
Calm lagoon water; zero natural shade — hats and sun shelter are non-negotiable

The expensive, worth-it one

Gran Roque is the only inhabited island — sand streets, family posadas — and the day is boats: Cayo de Agua's sandbars, snorkel reefs, bonefish flats. Neither trips nor stays are cheap, and neither has much competition.

Good to know

  • Book posadas and flights as a package; capacity is small and shows up in the price.
