Embarking on a comprehensive 12-hour journey to explore Skopje, North Macedonia, proved to be an enriching experience. The trip was meticulously organized by Tratoli, involving a series of four-hour segments beginning with a drive from Sofia, then a well-structured time in Skopje that was divided equally between a guided tour and free exploration, and finally culminated with the return journey. For a seamless travel experience, Tratoli is the go-to choice. My journey began with a punctual hotel pick-up, setting the tone for an impeccably organized tour. Our guide, Martin, proved to be a treasure trove of insights, effortlessly blending extensive knowledge of Bulgaria's rich history with a delightful sense of humor. His ability to intertwine personal anecdotes and local lore brought an unforgettable personal touch to our excursion. Exploring Plovdiv was a highlight, where the city's historical core dazzles with its well-preserved Roman architecture and a collection of charming Orthodox churches. Culinary enthusiasts will revel in the array of fine restaurants, especially when venturing toward the Kapana district, a mere five-minute stroll from the Roman amphitheater. I wholeheartedly suggest dining at Aylyakria—a hidden gem where the journey concludes as Google Maps indicates, marked subtly by napkins, with its signage in traditional Bulgarian Cyrillic script. Overall, I would definitely recommend booking through Tratoli for an unforgettable exploration of Bulgaria's enchanting landscapes and cultural heritage.

Upon meeting Vessi, my guide provided by Tratoli, right at my centrally-located hotel, we commenced our journey through Sofia on foot. Expecting a vehicle to whisk me to the city's famous landmarks, I was surprised to learn that the itinerary was designed for walking. Despite my recollection of booking a private car tour, Vessi expertly navigated me to each attraction, sharing her extensive knowledge of Sofia's historical backdrop. It's worth noting that the city's highlights could be explored independently should one choose to do so. Even though Vessi earned an exceptional rating for her expertise, I must admit that navigating the city on foot for two and a half hours was a challenge due to my knee issues, especially after having opted for what I believed to be a car tour service at a significant cost. While I treasure my experience in Sofia, my initial encounter with the city had already been serendipitously covered by the driver from the airport to my hotel and during a subsequent group tour of the Balkans. For future travelers considering personal tours, it is critically important to verify the details of your booking. In retrospect, the walking tour, although enlightening, didn't align with my expectations and did not justify the expense of $108.10, given my prior sightseeing experiences and physical comfort.

Our experience with the Tratoli travel package included an exceptional Bulgarian driver who made our journey to Skopje an absolute delight. His flawless driving, engaging historical commentary, and witty humor transformed the 4-hour drive into an enjoyable adventure, despite the rainy weather. He even went out of his way to provide umbrellas for us, a thoughtful gesture that spoke volumes about his character. During our stay in Skopje, the Macedonian guide we encountered didn't quite live up to the standard set by our driver. His rather discreet suggestions on "a good time" in the city and the evident commercial partnership with a local restaurant were, frankly, the low points of our tour. Fortunately, the two hours of free time we had allowed us to discover the London Inn, a charming venue near the city's center. We found both the food and drinks to be exemplary, and we highly recommend a visit there. Returning to Sofia with our Bulgarian guide was once again seamless and reinforced the high regard we have for him. His presence was the zenith of our trip. In summary, I rate this travel experience with 5 stars, majorly attributed to the outstanding service provided by our Bulgarian driver and the enjoyable time in Skopje. Despite the less than perfect encounter with the Macedonian guide, the tour was an enriching opportunity to explore North Macedonia. I would advise travelers to consider this tour for its educational and cultural value.
