However, the transfer segment from Mekele to Lalibela was less satisfactory. Although an auto with a driver was arranged, the rough terrain called for a 4x4 vehicle, not the minivan provided. The 11-hour journey proved grueling; with a more suitable vehicle, we could have saved at least three hours.

Remember, however, that certain sites, like rock-hewn churches and monasteries, may restrict women's entry, so it's best to plan with this in mind. I highly recommend the fly/drive trips to Lalibela, with its breathtaking churches, and to Gondar, where the castles resonate with Ethiopia's storied past. A day's trek into the Simien mountains to encounter Gelada monkeys is equally unforgettable. The breathtaking landscapes I experienced on my journey are undoubtedly among the most extraordinary, inhospitable, and extreme environments I have encountered. The surreal and captivating sight and sounds of the Erta Ale volcano are an experience I treasure; the memory is one that will linger with me for years to come. Coordinating with the team at Magma office, particularly Israel, was a highlight, as they ensured smooth communication and efficiently organized my internal travel arrangements, which I booked through Tratoli. However, upon my arrival in Semera, it became clear that the operator selected had little impact on the overall experience as each traveler seemed to be part of the same tour. This led to overcrowded vehicles, detracting significantly from comfort during our travels. Furthermore, the guide assigned to us fell short of expectations, displaying a lack of interest in our wellbeing or in sharing insights about the incredible places we visited. This became particularly evident when I fell violently ill on the first night by the campsite, and the guide neglected to provide any assistance or check on my condition. The absence of a passionate and caring guide was a glaring missed opportunity, as their presence could have transformed the trip into an exceptional adventure.
