Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens have provided a green space to residents and visitors in the central city area since 1855, but the first crops were planted on the land in the 1820s by convicts, to feed the nearby prison colony. Both ferries and water taxis stop in Dunwich, about a 12-mile (20-kilometer) drive or bus ride from Point Lookout.Whales pass by between June and November, with September and October being the best months for sightings, but there’s not a bad time to visit Gorge Walk. As expected, it’s busiest over weekends and during Australian school breaks. Wallabies and kangaroos are most active around sunrise and sunset.Beyond migrating humpback whales and their calves, Straddie is an excellent place for spotting marine life. Visit at sunrise or sunset to catch the wild dolphins that come to the jetty at Amity Point. It’s in the Eagle Heights area of the town named Tamborine Mountain. Unless you’re on a tour, you’ll need your own wheels to get there, but it’s conveniently located beside Macdonnell Road, one of the main roads through the town.The distillery is open seven days a week, from late morning until early evening. The Rainforest Bar is open during the day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
