The seamless transition at the Belize-Guatemala border, a procedure facilitated by the tour which included the $20 departure fee, led us to our Guatemalan driver and guide. Here, we switched vehicles and set off towards Tikal. Despite some unforeseen delays such as road construction and a local village protest seeking employment opportunities at the historical site, the experience remained positive. Thanks to the effective handling of these situations by our guide, who anticipated a resolution in about an hour—which was accurate—our plans remained intact. The tour had contingency plans for visiting another Mayan site, but fortunately, the route to Tikal soon opened up. On arrival at Tikal, our expert guide led us through the awe-inspiring remnants of the ancient city. The tour unveiled a rich tapestry of history amongst the towering structures, complemented by glimpses of wildlife, such as monkeys and birds observed during the forest walk. The exploration period was well-structured, offering us time to climb and discover the majestic ruins independently. A delightful lunch at a local restaurant capped off the walking tour, a meal that was conveniently included in the package. However, one point of feedback regards the provision of water; the morning's park closure meant no availability of water on-site, and none had been provided by the tour. This oversight became a slight inconvenience as purchasing water wasn't an option without Guatemalan currency, and the acceptance of US dollars or Belizean currency was unclear. Therefore, as a friendly suggestion for future travelers and perhaps a minor enhancement for Tratoli's tour offerings, consider carrying an ample supply of water or confirming with the company about its provision, potentially for a small additional fee. In conclusion, our trek with Tratoli was a lasting adventure that navigated the unpredictability of local conditions with grace, ultimately delivering a fulfilling and enriching tour of Tikal, revealing the splendor of an ancient civilization waiting to be rediscovered.
