Discovering the warmth of Ghanaians has been an absolute delight – their initial reservation quickly dissolves with a simple smile and greeting. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing this firsthand on an adventure into the heart of Ghana, a journey I embarked upon through the travel services of Tratoli. Accompanied by my exemplary guide from Bilson Tours Ghana and a proficient driver, we navigated the dusty transformation of a road becoming a dual carriageway, en route to an awe-inspiring lake formed by a meteor impact. The 90-minute drive seemed to disappear as we indulged in captivating conversations. The destination itself, a marvel to behold, presented a stunning lake whose placid waters offered a profoundly peaceful boat crossing. Immersed in this tranquil environment, our local guide, Fred, imparted his extensive wisdom about the lake's significance to the Ashanti people and the surrounding area. The landscape around the lake harmoniously accommodates several hotels, blending seamlessly with the natural forestry, alongside private residences and picturesque local villages lining the periphery. This ecosystem is home to an array of wildlife including antelopes and monkeys, with residents cultivating their own food staples right there. Partaking in the local cuisine further enriched the experience – an indulgence in freshly-fried fish accompanied by a spice blend of pepper, tomatoes, and onions, which I had the opportunity to grind by hand. Witnessing the mother hens valiantly fend off their mates to feed chicks with the fish heads I offered was both amusing and heartwarming. Going beyond the role of a guide, my Bilson Tours host embraced me as part of their family, safeguarding me from potential pitfalls common to tourists and substituting a horse-riding plan sidelined by renovations with an unforgettable tour of Kumasi city. I wholeheartedly endorse Bilson Tours for anyone traveling to Ghana; with them, you gain not just a guide, but a cherished friend and an authentic experience. Their professionalism and personal touch made this trip exceptional, and I am grateful to Tratoli for steering me towards such a fulfilling adventure.

I had a disappointing experience with Bilson Tours, despite having booked a travel package through Tratoli. Their lack of organization was evident as they arranged activities with The Green Ranch for horseback riding and a well-coordinated local team for a boat tour. Unfortunately, we only got to enjoy the boat trip and missed out on the included lunch. The transport provided fell short of expectations, lacking both air conditioning and seat belts, which made the two-hour journey uncomfortable. Additionally, there was a miscommunication with the scheduling; we were instructed to reach Kumasi by 8:30 am, not knowing that the horseback riding at the ranch was actually planned for 7:40 am. Consequently, we arrived late at 11 am and weren't aware of the timing issue until 2 pm after a lengthy wait for the ranch owner, who was unavailable. Our interaction with Papa Yaw from Bilson Tours added to the frustration as he neglected to address the mishap with the horseback riding timing and instructed us to wait until 4 pm, contradicting the initial promise of a 3 pm return. Reflecting on the experience, the value certainly did not match the $75 USD price tag, and thankfully, since we didn't prebook and negotiated locally (having found the tour via TripAdvisor), we managed to argue for a reduced rate. Overall, the experience failed to meet standard expectations for a professionally organized tour.
