In November 2019, I had the pleasure of exploring the dynamic Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam for a memorable week. My adventure included an exceptional full-day expedition combining the historical Cu Chi Tunnels and the enchanting Mekong Delta, arranged seamlessly through Tratoli. My experience was enhanced by the comfort of a luxurious, air-conditioned limousine van adorned with lounge-style seats that featured built-in massages. I was in the good hands of an excellent tour guide and an able driver who ensured our VIP Tours experience was top-notch. Starting with an early hotel pickup at 7 am from Riverside Residential Apartments in District 4, which is noteworthy due to many tour companies avoiding this area because of traffic, we embarked on an 11-hour journey. Our first stop was the Cu Chi Tunnels around 10 am. Crammed with history, the tunnels allowed me to literally crawl through history and get a glimpse of the tactics used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. Although not for the claustrophobic or less fit, the 250-kilometer tunnel system with sections safe for tourists offers a unique perspective on the past. With the guidance of an informative tour, our visit lasted about an hour and a half. Additional activities such as shooting live rounds (for a fee) and browsing through war-era souvenirs were interesting, although travelers should heed advice regarding airport security regulations about such keepsakes. The next segment of our excursion brought us to the vibrant Mekong River Delta by midday. Aboard a traditional Vietnamese motorboat, we journeyed to Unicorn Island, indulging in a delightful array of dishes like Pho and Vietnamese Hotpot during a shared traditional lunch. The island offered myriad experiences from holding a beehive honeycomb to embracing a tame python, along with opportunities to purchase traditional sweets and keepsakes.
