Hatta Mountain Day Trip

Hatta is Dubai's exclave tucked into the Hajar mountains, and reaching it is part of the appeal: it sits about 130 kilometres from the city, roughly a 90-minute drive whether you go in your own car or on an organised tour. There is no public transport out here, so plan your transport before you set off rather than counting on catching something on arrival.

Budget a full day for the trip — most visitors spend somewhere between eight and ten hours here once travel and activities are added up. That span is enough to string together the headline draws: paddling on the teal water of the Hatta Dam, wandering the heritage village, riding the mountain-bike trails, and pausing for the obligatory photo at the HATTA sign.

Timing matters more here than almost anywhere in the emirate. The window from October to March is when Hatta is at its best, with conditions comfortable enough for the outdoor activities that define the place. Summer is simply too hot for kayaking, cycling and trail walking, so if you are visiting in the warmer months it is worth reconsidering the itinerary.

It is a rewarding outing for families with older children. Tandem kayaks let an adult and a child share a boat on the dam, and the easier trails are manageable for kids who are past the toddler stage. Pace the day around their energy, and the mix of water, mountains and open space tends to hold interest across the hours.
