It's their forest
The monkeys are wild, fed by the temple, and completely unafraid. Follow the three rules — carry no food, grip nothing loosely, don't smile with teeth — and you'll have a delightful hour among 14th-century temples strangled by banyan roots. Break them and a macaque will efficiently re-educate you.
