Witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat is inherently unpredictable; success depends on multiple factors such as the time of year, sheer fortune, weather conditions, expertise of the guide, and efficient communication among safari leaders. Admittedly, the guide assigned to me was amiable and exhibited a deep understanding of Etosha National Park. Nonetheless, during an extensive day's journey from dawn at 7 am until dusk at 6 pm, we encountered a meager showing of fauna; only a couple of elephants made an appearance, lacking the grandeur of their typical herds, accompanied by a modest turnout of springboks, zebras, and ostriches. While Etosha is renowned for its abundant waterholes, magnets for diverse wildlife species, our expedition did not capitalize on this feature, as we scarcely ventured towards these animal hotspots. Consequently, prime sightings of cheetahs, lionesses, and elephant herds, which other members of my camping group were fortunate to witness at nearby waterholes that very day, eluded us. Compounding the issue was the communication method in use among Etosha's guides. Unlike other parks where walkie-talkies facilitate real-time updates amongst guides, Etosha's reliance on a WhatsApp group proved to be a bottleneck. The travel company's oversight in not providing data for my guide's communication needs left us in a silo, to wander vast distances in isolation, a stark contrast to the communal exchanges of sightings that could have enriched our experience. This lack of collaboration and the subsequent solitude on the game drive culminated in what was, regrettably, the most disappointing safari I have ever experienced.

When embarking on game drives, one anticipates encountering a diverse array of animals; however, during a full day's journey, I merely sighted a couple of elephants, some zebras, springboks, and a squirrel. My past safaris across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, and South Africa involved guides actively communicating via walkie-talkies to share sightings. In stark contrast, this time, the guides relied on a WhatsApp group to exchange information about exciting finds like lions and rhinos. Regrettably, the company assigned me a guide without mobile data, hindering our chances of witnessing such exclusive wildlife encounters. Meanwhile, another group from my camp, led by a different tour operator and benefiting from effective communication, enjoyed sights of lionesses, cheetahs, and numerous elephants. The disappointing aspect was further compounded when I discovered that booking the safari directly with my camp the following day proved to be substantially more economical—costing merely half of what I'd paid to Tratoli. While I might recommend this tour for first-timers seeking a basic introduction to game drives, seasoned wildlife enthusiasts might want to consider other options for a richer and more rewarding experience.
